Preparing for Surgery

Before Your Surgery

We're pleased you have chosen Navicent Health Baldwin for your surgery. We are committed to providing you with the best healthcare possible and offer the following information to help you prepare and to be well informed about what to expect. We also want to make sure we know everything about you to assure we provide you with the safest care possible. Once your surgery has been scheduled you will be given a pre-admission appointment several days before your surgery. Try to arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled time to allow for registration. Same Day Surgery (SDS) is located in the hospital's Park Tower. At this time, your health history will be reviewed by a Registered Nurse and an Anesthesiologist. Any necessary testing such as lab, X-ray, EKG will be completed at this time. Every effort is made to complete this in a timely manner. Please plan for a least an hour. To provide an efficient process, please bring the following to the appointment.

  • Copy of insurance card(s)
  • Photo ID
  • All paperwork given to you by your doctor. Please fill out the 3-page assessment before your appointment.
  • A list of all medications, including over the counter medicines that you are taking. (You may bring your medicine bottles if desired).

Please let us know if you have any special religious, cultural or physical needs. You will be instructed when to arrive for your surgery. Same Day Surgery pre-admission hours are 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Telephone numbers: 478-454-3633 or 478-453-6779. Fax 478-454-3636.

Preparation Instructions for Surgery

Do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the day before your surgery. Children under five will be given specific instructions on the day of pre-admission. Take ALL your morning medicines with a sip of water except diabetic medicine. If you are on a blood thinner, please discuss this with your family doctor before stopping your medication. Shower or bathe before arriving for Same Day Surgery. Do not use deodorant or lotions. You may brush your teeth and use mouthwash. Do not wear any makeup. Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to remove. Bring a case for your glasses. Bring a case/solution for contacts. Do not bring jewelry, valuables or large sums of money to the hospital. ORMC will not be responsible. Do not smoke or drink alcoholic beverages within 24 hour of your surgery. A family member or responsible adult must accompany you. You cannot drive. This adult must be with you when you are discharged and insure that a responsible adult will care for you for 24 hours. The surgery will be cancelled if someone is not available to be with you during this time. Parents/guardians must remain at the hospital while their children are here. We suggest two adults remain with each child, if possible. Notify the Same Day Surgery unit at 478-457-6779 and your surgeon if you are sick or unable to come the day of your surgery. On the day of your surgery, you will report to the registration desk. We make every effort to keep your wait time to a minimum but there could be delays in the surgery schedule that cause you to wait for an extended period. Every effort will be made to keep you aware of unusual situations. Once you are in the pre-op area, we will prepare you for surgery. Your family may stay with you until you go to surgery.

The Operating Room

Navicent Health Baldwin's Operating Room consists of five operating suites which are available for both inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures. A full range of surgical specialties are performed, including:

  • Urology;
  • Ophthalmology;
  • Vascular surgery;
  • Pacemakers;
  • Podiatric surgery;
  • Pediatric surgery;
  • Ear, nose and throat surgery;
  • General surgery.

Our team of skilled surgical professionals perform highly complex procedures on an outpatient basis using the latest in state-of-the-art technology and techniques. These include procedures such as uni-compartmental knee replacement, computer-assisted total knee replacement, laparoscopic nephrectomy and brachytherapy seed implantation. These state-of-the-art medical technologies result in:

  • Smaller incisions for faster healing
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Quicker return to everyday living

Our #1 priority is to keep patients safe. Among the safeguards in place is a requirement for medical staff members who care for you to ask you to give your name and birthday. This will be compared to your ID bracelet. You will also be asked to confirm your surgical procedure. Your doctor will mark the site of your surgery before you go into the operating room. Hand washing is another important safeguard in preventing the spread of infection. Please take an active role in your care by washing your hands and asking your visitors to wash their hands.

After Your Surgery- The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit

You will recover under the watchful eyes of our highly-skilled, professional, registered nurses who are specially-trained in post-anesthesia care.

The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is a 10-bed, state-of-the-art, critical care unit that provides immediate phase one post-anesthesia care. The PAR is staffed by highly-skilled, registered nurses who are trained in basic life support and advanced cardiac life support for both adult and pediatric patients. Patients are closely monitored after undergoing surgical procedures in which they have received general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, epidural anesthesia, or I.V. sedation. Hemodynamic monitoring and post-operative pain management are provided for both inpatients and outpatients.

An anesthesiologist provides coverage for the PAR 24 hours a day/7 days a week. After surgery you will be given something to drink. If you are in pain, it is your responsibility to inform the nurses. The nurse will ask you to rate your pain on a scale of 1-10. Our goal is to control your pain to a tolerable level before going home. Do not expect the pain to completely go away.

Returning Home Following Surgery

Before you are sent home, all of your instructions will be provided in writing and explained to you and your family. You will be required to tolerate fluids without nausea, get yourself dressed, and may be required to urinate before you leave. After you return home, you may receive a customer satisfaction survey from the hospital. We urge you to take the time to provide us with your comments.
