Atrial Fibrillation (AFIB) affects more than 2.7 million Americans, often leading to other medical complications including Heart Failure and Stroke.
AFIB is the most common type of heart Arrhythmia. An arrhythmia is when the heart beats too slowly, too fast, or in an irregular way. When a person has AFIB, the normal beating in the upper chambers of the heart (the two atria) is irregular, and blood does not flow as well as it should from the atria to the lower chambers of the heart (the two ventricles). This can lead to stroke, heart failure and other health problems. AFIB may occur in brief episodes, or it may be a permanent condition.
At Navicent Health, we have an Atrial Fibrillation Program. Our Physician Champion and AFIB Program Manager work with our AFIB team to ensure that our hospital consistently provides the latest evidence-based treatments and patient care to our Atrial Fibrillation patients. We have a dedicated unit in the Heart Tower, where physicians and nurses are trained to use protocols and the best care practices according to the ACC/AHA Clinical Performance and Quality Measures for Adults with Atrial Fibrillation or Atrial Flutter guidelines.
